What’s wrong with the statement is the last sentence – “there is a missing dollar.”

Every other statement is correct. There are three sailors. 3 x $9 does equal $27. The front desk little punk did take $2. And $27 + $2 does equal $29.

But there is no missing dollar because the front desk man is stealing $2 from the $27 that the sailors paid. That equals the $25, which is what the motel now owns.

There is no missing dollar.

The $2 the front desk punk took is a trick to throw you off.

The sailors paid $30 originally.
The manager gave back $5. (30-5=25)
The punk kept $2 (5-2=3)
The sailors were returned $3.
The punk has $2.

2+3 is still $5. The books are balanced. There is no missing dollar.

DOnt think in terms of what the sailors paid plus what the bellhop kept. The fact that the math comes so close is coincidental.

Answer: The “missing dollar” is w/Sailor C.
Explanation: (I feel like I’m in HS Math class.)
Think of the sailors as Sailor A (SA), Sailor B (SB), and Sailor C (SC).
SA and SB each paid w/a ten dollar bill. SC paid with a five dollar bill and five singles.
The KarmaWillGetYaFrontDeskMan uses SC’s money, the five singles, to pay
them back. He pockets two dollars, gives one dollar to SA, one
to SB, and one back to SC. The $25 paid to the motel consists of $20 from SA and SB combined, and $5 from SC. As for the extra $5, cheapfrontdeskman pockets two, SA and SB have one each, and one dollar returns to SC. So, the missing dollar is with SC.

I’m not a math genius, but there is no missing dollar. The statement should be, $27 minus the $2 that the front desk punk took would have equalled the $25 that they should have been paying for the night. It’s just that each of the sailors should each have received back an additional $0.67 cents (approximately) that the punk took instead.
